Obituary

Sandra Joy Hinojosa

February 14, 1946 – September 20, 2020

Sandra Joy Hinojosa, 74, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 20, 2020. Sandra was born and raised in Laredo, Texas.  She attended Laredo public schools and graduated from Martin High School with honors in 1964.  She is remembered fondly by friends and classmates who recall her active participation in many clubs and organizations. One of the highlights of her senior year was being crowned ROTC Sweetheart.  She attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in education.

She was a retired educator who had a passion for teaching and helping students in the Laredo community. Her entire career was spent teaching at the Laredo Independent School District.  She taught at M.S. Ryan Elementary School, Honoré Ligarde Elementary School, and Cigarroa High School. Her passion in education led her to pursue many certifications in numerous fields of education. After her retirement, her love of  teaching led her to  continue helping students through tutoring and homeschooling by creating her own educational center, High IQ. She loved helping all children, but had a special place in her heart for Bilingual and Special Education students. She received many accolades and accomplishments throughout her career. Most notably, she received the Walt Disney’s American Teacher Award in 1991, which she was awarded in Los Angeles, California.

Writing was one of her most cherished talents.  In her later years, she devoted countless hours to researching and writing proposals for her husband, renowned artist Armando Hinojosa.

Sandra was a wonderful mother and grandmother who found her greatest moments of happiness when surrounded by her family, especially her children and grandchildren.  She was known for her compassion and giving heart.  She enjoyed holiday gatherings which brought her family together. Most recently, she enjoyed spending time being surrounded by the beauty of nature at Rancho Hinojosa.

Sandra Joy is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Armando, and her beloved children, Dr. Armando R. (Yvonne) Hinojosa, David A. Hinojosa, and the Honorable Melissa Joy (Guillermo) Hinojosa Garcia.  She will be greatly missed by her loving grandchildren, Corina, Mickayla, Nicolas, Victoria Joy, and Matthew. She is also survived by her siblings, Danny (Colleen) Guerrero, Cynthia (Miguel) Conchas, Robert (Hilda) Guerrero, and Sylvia Rendon. Also, surviving her are numerous nephews, nieces, other loved relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Daniel and Grace Guerrero, her grandparents, William and Felicidad Lockwood, her in-laws, Geronimo and Amalia Hinojosa, and her beloved aunt, Maria Josefina “Mary Jo” Brenner.

Sandra Joy was under the loving medical care of her son, Dr. Armando R. Hinojosa.

We have happy memories from Martin High School and the art studio on Clark where our daughters Lisa and Cristina attended summer art workshops. Sandra and I enjoyed teaching at Ryan Elementarry at the same time. Also, we enjoyed a beautiful relationship throughout the years. We remember the ranchito and the other studio on Meadow where our first granddaughter, Alyssa was tutored by Sandra and instilled in her a lifelong love for reading. I have no magic words that I that will make the hole in your family disappear. Instead, please permit me to share a memory of Sandra. I only had the privilege of meeting and talking with Sandra a few times on my visits Laredo with Sylvia, but she and Armando always made me feel accepted and welcome. And for that I am very appreciative. I remember on my first Christmas visit how she and Armando surprised me with a gift - a framed photo of a print of a Buck by Armando; that was special, and it is a treasure of mine. So to the family, start filling that hole each and every day with a cherished memory of Sandra; and may those memories be forever alive in your hearts and minds.

First of all. my deepest and most sincere condolences to Armando. Sandra's children and grandchildren, Danny, Cynthia, Bobby and Sylvia. I have nothing but fond memories of growing up with all of you on Hendricks Ave. Sandra knew my own passion for teaching that had started at a very early age for me. I can still remember how she allowed me to grade her students' Spelling quizzes, giving me a chance to taste the world of education that was so much a part of her. Who would have guessed that decades later I would end up teaching English to her grandchildren Nick and Victoria. May God give you the strength and peace in this difficult time. Blessings to all; you're in my prayers. Much love, Melba N. Ornelas-Gonzales
