Obituary

Laredo- Ruben Martinez, 68, went home to be with the Lord on April 29th, 2019, surrounded by his adoring family.

Ruben was born in Lubbock, Texas on October 13, 1950, the eldest of eight children.  He graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University.  He was drafted into the United States Army in 1971 and served with distinction with the First Infantry Division.  During the Vietnam War, he was responsible for communication with the President of the United States. After the Army, he worked for Southwestern Bell for over 30 years and retired as an Engineer in 2005.  During his retirement, he lived life to the fullest with his wife, Maria Teresa, of 24 years. They enjoyed traveling the world from the Vatican to whale watching in Ecuador. He drove fast cars, rooted for his favorite sports teams, launched model rockets and created his own backyard oasis filled with captivating flowers and fruit trees. He enjoyed every moment with family and friends making them laugh with his witty one liners. He continued with his sense of humor up until he went home to be with the Lord.

As a man of faith, he recognized the importance of a relationship with Christ filled with love, forgiveness, humility and joy. Over the years he grew as a man of God. He was most proud of his family and adored his wife Tere who he referred to as his soul mate. He and his wife had six children, twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was blessed to be able to share his life with them and to see them grow in love and prosperity.

The family would like to thank Ruben’s nurse and daughter-in-law, Ana Laura Rodriguez and Serenity Hospice for their loving care.

"To the family of Mr. Martinez I offer my deepest sympathy, you are in my prayers as you try and cope with this harshest of realities of the life we now live, losing a loved one. May you find strength, comfort, and hope from God's unfailing Word. Meditating on Revelation 21:4, and John 5:28,29, has helped me in my times of loss, I pray you will be as well."

Ruben was a good friend followed by being a great brother-in-law. We grew together playing football on Sunday’s in our youth, enjoyed golf in our adult years and shared many fun times throughout our lifetime. I know you are in heaven happy surrounded by family. Our thoughts are prayers for DC, Becky, Lupe and Patty.

Sending my sincerest condolences to the entire Martinez family. From the time I was a little girl in Lubbock Texas to moving his family to San Antonio until I saw him last a few years ago Ruben was always a sweet and caring man. As a young girl I have many fond memories of Ruben as a loving friend to my parents, father to his children and a father-figure to myself and little brother - God has truly gained one of the good ones. Hugs to you Tere, Melissa, Cindy and Jonathan. Love - Erika Gonzales
