Obituary

Grisell Garza-Gongora, beloved daughter, sister, and friend to many, died peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones on Thursday morning, April 9, 2015. A native Laredoan, graduate of United High School, and TAMIU alumni, Grisell touched the lives of those she knew with her thoughtful and endlessly kind spirit.

Grisell was born on June 19, 1960.

A wise person once said, the more generous we are, the more joyous we become. Those who knew and loved Grisell know that her generosity and joy for simple, quiet things—friends, family, long conversations with beloved cousins, nieces and nephews—was boundless. Always ready to lend a hand or an ear to those she treasured, Grisell loved and lived unconditionally. She was an accountant by trade, but her happiest times were as a Karate instructor.  As a black belt instructor she taught her students about the beauty of strength that can only come from within.

Grisell will be remembered for the things she gave of unconditionally: her warm smile, her time, and her tender spirit. Her greatest strength was how, in the midst of daily life, she looked for, and found love all around her.

With her unexpected absence, we are reminded that sometimes it’s best to slow down, and perhaps make the time to enjoy our coffee, listen to our favorite song, or even ponder the splendor of a flower in bloom that would have otherwise remained in the shadows of our busy day. This is what Grisell lived for: a mind at peace, an unhurried pace, a movie or a meal with a loved one, and the singing she kept in her memories.

She is preceded in death by her beautiful mother, Raquel Garza-Gongora, who she missed more than words can describe.

She is survived by her father, Lazaro Garza-Gongora, sisters Yvette Saenz, Rachel (Robert) Gutierrez, and brother Beto (Jill) Garza Gongora, and nieces and nephews, Kristina Saenz, Analise, Alexa, and Alyssa Gutierrez, Kattya and Rocco Garza Gongora. Her aunt and Godmother Mine Barrera and cousins who she considered her brothers and sisters, Ramiro (Adriana) Barrera, Cordy (Julianne) Barrera, Raul Barrera, Rene (Julie) Barrera, Cynthia Garcia, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will be receiving family and friends Sunday, April 12, 2015, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services, where a holy rosary will be recited at 7:00pm.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 13, 2015, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.  Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00am.  Interment will follow at the family plot of the Cavalry Catholic Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be: Robert Gutierrez, Rocco Garza Gongora, Ramiro Barrera, Raul Barrera, Rene Barrera, and Juan Canavati.

My friends and I, from Hebbronville, would like to offer the Garza Gongora family our deepest condolences. We met Grisell while studying at LJC and Laredo State during the late 70s and early 80s. She was always kind, courteous, and friendly. She made us feel welcome in her home town. May she rest in peace, que descanse en paz.

I have only fond memories of my childhood friend, Grisell. Cute, sweet, fun, with a perpetual smile. Long forgotten memories of when we participated in elementary school sports, rising super early to be taken to the bus for the trip to the sporting event. To hanging out in high school and trying to stay out of trouble. Having fun was our number 1 priority! I'm certain Grisell will be missed by her family and all who knew her. Great personality, smart, full of life, and those gorgeous eyes! May she rest in the arms of Jesus.
