Obituary

Sgt. Gaspar “El Barbaro” Ambrose, passed away on January 21, 2021, at the age of 79. He was born in Victoria, Texas on November 12, 1941.

Gaspar was a graduate of MHS class of 61. He served and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

Sgt. Ambrose dedicated 35 years of service to the Laredo Police Department. While serving the city of Laredo, he received several recognitions, including officer and detective of the year. Police work was his passion & he truly loved his job.

After retirement, Gaspar & Gloria enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Las Vegas. Every summer, he would take the grandkids to the beach which became an annual tradition.

When he was not traveling, he spent his days with his friends hanging out at the mall or their monthly coffee gathering with local law enforcement retirees at “El Querreque”. We will all miss his hearty laugh and quick wit.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ambrosio & Clara Ambrose, brother Enrique Ambrose, nephew Jesus E Peña, and his in-laws José & Antonia Vera.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 52 years, Gloria, his children, Cynthia, Gaspar Jr., Rene & his wife Ruth Chatelain Ambrose. He is also survived by grandchildren: Gwendolyn V. & husband Seth Thamm, Renee Anthony Ambrose, Jennapher Ambrose, Jacob Anthony Ambrose, Kyle Mauldin, Rene Chatelain Ambrose; Siblings: Raquel & Humi Peña, Clarita & Joe De Leon & Rosa Castillo, as well as, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other family members and cherished friends.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his niece, Rosalva Peña, for all her support and guidance during Gaspar’s short illness.

My tio favorito. Oh how I miss you. How I wish we could have saved you by taking you sooner to the hospital. My biggest regret is that? What I’ll miss the most is your personality. You always made us all laugh and at times even embarrass us with your travesuras. But that’s the uncle we knew and loved. Love you for ever and miss you tremendously. Your niece Rosalva.

My deepest condolences to the entire Ambrose family for your loss. As I recall LPD Sgt. Gaspar Ambrose: He was dedicated to all he served; his family, the U.S. Army, the City and citizens of Laredo and his endless list of friends. He was pleasantly unique in his personality as those who ever met him would attest. He was unique in the tools and approaches he brought to the job and those approaches remained highly effective till the end of his career. He will forever be remembered for his trademark quick wit. He was a pleasure and an honor to work with. Sgt. Ambrose will be greatly missed.

My thanks to him for serving our country in the Army, and as a well honored and beloved Policeman and Detective. His job was very important, and I can see that he had many awards for the great work that he did through the years ! He was obviously a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and more.Love hearing about the yearly beach trips with his grandchildren and family How I love the photo of him looking so happy and healthy at his beloved Gwendolyn's wedding not so very long ago. Gaspar and I were class friends at a time in our lives when there were very good times, and lots and lots of fun and laughter.
