Obituary

Altagracia Menchaca Salinas passed away peacefully at the age of 99.  A native of Candela, Coahuila, Mexico, she was one of twelve children born to Manuel Menchaca and Juanita Salinas de Menchaca.  Moving to Laredo at the age of sixteen with some of her younger siblings, she studied English at Colegio Naranjo and then transferred to Laredo Public Schools.  She helped her brother, Isauro Menchaca, at his neighborhood store in the Azteca neighborhood before going to work at Richter’s Department Store.  After that she went to work for her brother, a custom broker, Israel Menchaca.

A good cook, Altagracia often gathered her extended family for a delicious home-cooked meal.  She also used her sewing talent to make aprons for some of her nieces and nephews.  Memories of the numerous stories of the lives of the saints she shared with nieces and nephews are also recounted.

Altagracia’s love of travel took her to Europe, Japan and various cities in the United States and Mexico. She was an active member of the San Agustin Catholic Parish until her health impeded that.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her siblings: José, Isauro, Manuel, Israel, and Ramiro Menchaca as well as Antonia M. Garcia, Petra M. Jimenez, Dora Menchaca, Santos M. Guajardo, Ma de la Luz Menchaca, and Carmen M. Azios as well as numerous in laws and other family members.

Altagracia is survived by her sister-in-law: Mildred Menchaca as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.  Special thanks to Mildred Menchaca for her devoted attention and care, and to Rosario Azios for her comforting visits.  The family would like to express their utmost gratitude to her doctor and nephew, Dr. Diego Menchaca, to her loyal and caring caregivers: Cata, Lucia, and Alejandra.

The family will receive guests Thursday, December 17, 2015, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services where a holy rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm.  Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2015, at San Agustin Cathedral.  Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am.  Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be: David D. Menchaca, Carlo G. Menchaca, Ramiro Menchaca, Jose Bulmaro Guajardo, Victor Azios and Carlos Limon.  “Rest in peace Altagracia”
