Obituary

Luz Leal Sr., 62, entered into internal rest on Tuesday, October 13, 2020.

Luz was born on December 13, 1957, in Alice, TX. He attended Alice High School where his charismatic spirit and character shined on and off the football field. He was a proud Alice Coyote and anyone who knew him knew he cherished the glory days of Friday nights.

Luz married Gloria Salinas, his high school sweetheart, whom he loved unconditionally. They shared 43 years of marital bliss. Aside from his loving wife, he was abundantly proud of and adored his two children and grandchildren. Luz’s family was his greatest accomplishment and his biggest love. He never stopped planning the adventures they could share together.

He spent many years coaching Del Mar little league, participated in numerous menudo cook offs as well as endless community service events and generally was a pillar in our community. He had a passion for lending a helping hand wherever he could. To know him was to love him.

Luz is preceded in death by his parents Erineo T. Leal and Albesa V. Leal, brother George Leal and father in law David G. Salinas. Luz is survived by his loving wife Gloria Leal, children Luz Leal Jr. (Erica), Liana Lopez (Efrain). Grandchildren Luz III, Gabriella Faith, and Brooke Addison. Also surviving him are his mother in law Maria B. Salinas, sister in laws Sylvia Salinas Ruiz and Diana Salinas Garcia (Antonio Jr.), nephews John D. (Rachel), Marc L., and Antonio III and nieces Ashley N., and Stephanie M. (William).

What can I say about Luz? A true gentleman! Funny as can be! He was always nice to me. Years would pass between times we saw each other and he made it seem like it was just a couple days. I have so many great memories of Luz from my childhood. I remember when he was just “the boyfriend” and Grace and Mark (my parents) would come to Alice for a visit. Gloria and Luz, high school kids, would come over To say hello and Luz would work the room. My mom and especially my dad, loved him. I always remember How he shook hands with my dad hugged the old ladies. I learned from it and did the same when I was older. I learned to not be shy. You will be missed, Luz. I know we will meet again. Love you, cuz.

I feel very privledged to have crossed paths with Luz Sr. during this lifetime ... Luz was a special kinda guy that you just couldn't help but like and love after you got to know him over time ... Luz Sr. was from Alice, Texas and I am from Kingsville. Luz Sr. always asked me about Kingsville's Bubba Walker a great running back that played during the time Luz Sr. played for Alice. Although our high schools were bitter rivals Luz Sr. always welcomed me into his home for a good Cowboys game and a Carne ... Rest in Peace Luz Sr.

I remember Big Luz from all the wonderful BBQ’s at Uncle David’s. He was always the ‘life of the party’. He had this amazing storytelling ability, I just loved to sit around with everyone & listen to him remember his football days, his decision not to take that Baylor scholarship, his love for his soulmate (my cousin Gloria) and his children. His presence made everything special & I’m so sad that he is not out there somewhere making somebody’s day happier & life better. But we will all be together again one day and that will be a GREAT day. Love to you all & you are in my prayers.
