Obituary

Roberto Gonzalez, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Guero”, was called by the LORD to his eternal home on Friday, October 8, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro and Catalina Gonzalez, his brothers, Alejandro, Carlos “Chalo”, Hector, Mario, Jose “Perico”, and Raul Gonzalez.

Roberto was born in Laredo, July 20, 1944, and was raised in a home with six brothers and one sister. He served as a drum major in “La Banda Del Animo” at Martin High School and graduated in 1962. He was proudly called into service during the Vietnam War from February of 1966 to February of 1967. He served as a Crew Chief/G5 Specialist for the 120th Army Aviation Airborne Division known as “The Deans”. He spoke fondly of the time he got to serve his country and continued to serve later in life as part of The Laredo Honor Guard. For many years, he volunteered his time to transport veterans to and from doctors’ appointments at Audie Murphy Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He enjoyed his time with friends at the “neighborhood” and at the American Legion post 59.

His favorite hobbies were gardening, cooking, and photography. You could see his talents displayed in his daughters’ lawns, his numerous photo albums, and the delicious menudo he often made for holiday gatherings. He enjoyed watching the Cowboys and whatever boxing match he could find with his sons-in-law and friends. He proudly worked with US Customs for over 20 years. What made him proudest were his three daughters and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Claudia (Miguel) Gonzalez-Mata, Laura (Joey) Gonzalez-Ortiz, Eva (Javier) Solis, also Evangelina Gonzalez the mother of his children, his grandchildren, Nathan and Alex Mata, Randy and Marcos Solis, and John Robert Ortiz, his sister Oralia (Rudy) Gallardo, sister-in-law Yolanda Gonzalez, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

We invite you to celebrate the life and memory of Guero with his family at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services, on Thursday October 14th, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  A prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Departure to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church will take place Friday, October 15th at 8:20 am, service to start at 9:00 am. Interment will follow with Military Honors provided by the Laredo Honor Guard and presentation of the U.S. flag will be provided by the U.S. Army at the Veteran’s Section of the Laredo City Cemetery.

We will cherish you fondly in our hearts forever, Dad. Thank you for everything. We will love you forever and always.

“The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

My most sincere condolences to the Gonzalez Family, May he rest in eternal peace?????? Robert was a co-worker of mine, I had the privilege and honor of working with him for approximately 10 years at U.S Customs. I have great memories of “El Guero”. He always had great stories to tell, great jokes, and great conversations about the Cowboys. I enjoyed seeing him at Briskets and Beers for breakfast many years after he retired. May you Rest In Peace Amigo and thank you for your friendship. ??????????
