Sylvia L. Vela, a beloved wife, dedicated mother, cherished sister, and friend passed away peacefully on August 8, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on December 21, 1941, in Laredo, Texas, Sylvia was a beacon of perseverance, compassion, and service throughout her life.
Sylvia graduated from Ursuline Academy in Laredo before attending Laredo Junior College for a year. Her childhood dream of pharmacy led her to the University of Texas in Austin, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1964. As one of only four women in her graduating class, Sylvia’s accomplishments were a testament to her determination and skill. She was an active member of Kappa Epsilon, a professional pharmacy fraternity, and later served as Vice President of the Webb County Pharmaceutical Association.
On June 22, 1968, Sylvia married Luis Vela Jr., and together they built a life filled with love and mutual support. Sylvia’s commitment to education and community service extended beyond her career. In 1994, she with her siblings established the Laurel Sisters Scholarship and, in 1997, the Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Z. Laurel and Family Scholarship, ensuring future generations had the opportunities she cherished. Her devotion to her religion prompted her to became an active board member of Casa Misericordia and a Section Representative for Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Sylvia’s professional journey spanned 37 years, with her final nine years as the pharmacist-in-charge at Gateway Community Health Center. Her retirement in 2001 marked the end of a distinguished career dedicated to improving the health and well-being of her community.
Sylvia is remembered for her unwavering dedication to her profession, her generosity of spirit, and her role as a mentor and role model. Also, she shared her passion for reading and curiosity to understand space and the stars with others. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and an enduring impact on those she served.
Sylvia is survived by her children, Luis A. Vela (Dawn) and Sylvia Y. Vela; her grandchildren, Eric S. Caudle Jr. and London G. Vela; her siblings, Ricardo Laurel (Gabriela), Anita Ramirez (Joe), and Nora Francis (Brian) and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her deeply. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luis Vela Jr., father, Alonzo Z. Laurel, mother, Esther G. Laurel, sisters, Diana Laurel and Yolanda L. Swope (Richard) and brother, Alonzo Laurel. A memorial service will be held in her honor, celebrating a life lived with grace, commitment, and love.
A heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to her medical professionals and to Claudia Reyes, caregiver, for all their care and support.
