Ruben O. Garcia, 86, entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 30, 2021.
He was born in Hebbronville, Texas on September 28, 1935, but was a lifelong resident of Laredo, Texas. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, uncle, and friend.
Ruben O. graduated from Martin High School and then enlisted in the U. S. Army with a tour in Germany with the 6th Armored Cavalry, and a tour in France with the 554th Ordinance Company at Braccone Army Depot. He then returned to the U. S. and was assigned to the 52nd Missile Air Defense Battalion in Key Largo, Florida. He attended the U. S. Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Maryland. Upon completion, he was assigned to 203rd Military Intelligence Group in the Dominican Republic. Upon returning to Laredo, he worked at Falstaff Distributing and later began working for the U. S. Postal Service for 24 years before his retirement.
He was an active member of LULAC Council 12, Veterans of Foreign Wars 9184, and American Legion Post 59. He proudly served as Post 59 Commander, 23rd District Commander, and 3rd Division Commander of the American Legion Department of Texas. Ruben O. also enjoyed being a member of the American Legion Post 59 Honor Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents Guadalupe Garcia and Luisa Quiroga Garcia, his siblings Maria Luisa (Abel) Rodriguez, Esperanza (Eduardo) Lopez, Alicia Rangel, Oscar Garcia, and his in-laws Tomas and Rosa Vela.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Cecilia Vela Garcia and children: Ruben O. Garcia, Jr., Ken Garcia, Cecilia (Dago) Hornedo, Rosalynn (Frank) Gutierrez, Dorannette (Javier) Morin, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, sister Osbelia (+Morris) Bode, brother in law Jesus “Chuy” Rangel, and numerous nephews and nieces.
The family will be receiving guests on Monday, October 4th at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with interment immediately following at Laredo City Cemetery.
