Rodolfo Barrera, 94, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 in Laredo, Texas. He was born April 4, 1918 to Maria Garza-Gongora Elizondo and Jose Maria Barrera. On October 16, 1948, he married Maria Teresa Prado (“Matecha”) in Laredo, Texas. He served four years in the United States Army during WWII, and he was promoted as a staff sergeant. Rodolfo was one of the original Band of Brothers. He was a member of the third wave to enter Omaha Beach after D-Day under General Patton where he served in the third armored division. During his military service, he was decorated with the EAME Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, good conduct, and the Purple Heart Medal. In 1995, the French awarded him with the Operation Overlord Normandy Veterans Medal. Upon honorable discharge, he attended Laredo Junior College and worked as an assistant county auditor for Webb County for forty years. Rodolfo was one of the founders of the Webb County databases during the mid to late eighties. After retirement, his hobbies included traveling, painting, reading, wood crafting, but most of all, spending quality time with his grandchildren. He was also part of Los Chismosos Coffee Club where enjoyed coffee outings with close friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Maria Teresa, his son Rodolfo Barrera Jr. (Crisenda +), his sisters, Evangelina Barrera, and Francisca Barrera (Jesus Lozano +), and his brothers Jose Barrera (Ofelia +), Santiago Barrera, Raul Barrera (Minerva +), and Ernesto Barrera. Survivors include his daughters; Carmen Gomez of Houston, Texas (Samuel Gomez), M aria Teresa Barrera Vargas of San Antonio (Robert D. Vargas), Graciela Barrera Rincon of Laredo, Texas (Rodolfo Rincon) and; two sons, Gerardo Barrera of Laredo, Texas (Blanca Barrera), and Bill Barrera of Austin, Texas (Tamera Barrera); sisters, Consuelo Azios (Benjamin Azios) of Houston, Texas, Maria Del Carmen Garcia (Jose Angel Garcia), ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The family would like extend their gratitude to his caretakers, Patricia Sanchez, Maria Magdalena Mancias, and Dr. Milton Haber who lovingly cared for him for many years. “Belo,” as he was known will be greatly missed.
