Diana, little Mike, Eddie, and extended family, please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences on Mike's passing. I have struggled with this since I heard on that Monday and have even had a hard time returning to post this on the website (I am sorry). Mike was a good soul and a good friend. I can't count the number of memories. At Ryan Elementary we rode bikes afterhours when no one was around to stop us from competing and jumping off the higher curbs or speeding down the sidewalks, and off to his house or his grandmothers. These days parents wouldn't let a 9-year-old put the miles on their BMX bike that we did. We played little league together and later played many years of golf on the Nixon golf team and anytime we could, often with his father (cruising in the "Combi"). Several times many of us raced the sun to see if we could get in 45 or 54 holes. Having left town and somewhat disconnected, I hadn't spoken with Mike since 2002 and yet I remember it well. I always thought I would run into him again, just like that day. Mike's face was so honest when he spoke. He couldn't lie if he wanted too. "Ehh", he would respond with a slight squint in the eyes when you called him out. So funny - what a heart he had. Mike's comedic timing was there at young age and frankly, could be legendary. At the end of a particularly tough golf tournament, Mike threw his hands up in the air in victory and yelled, "two under par!". Just yards away was the leaderboard and a couple of participants who assumed they would win (as they were at the top), and several of us (his teammates - waiting for the rest of us to finish as we did). For a split second those of us who heard didn't know what to think. Turns out his day had not gone so well, but what a kick he got by inspiring doubt in anyone within earshot, especially the guys on top (!). Occasionally he would bust out the famous sword act of Pro Golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez when he sunk a putt on the green or would yell, "esa corre licesiado!" (something he picked up from “Coka” on the Martin High golf team) after bad drive off the tee that he hoped would just keep rolling till it looked good (Or, it was to encourage you for your BAD drive). Mike's musical understanding and timing was impressive. He loaned me cassette tapes at an early age, many musical influences he attributed to his brother. I will also remember him as the only person who never missed a chord change while playing "air guitar" to some music playing in the background, and NEVER missed the timing on cymbal crash (around the head with drumstick first! – like a true Metal fan). If we're honest, none of us get it right, not all the time, no matter the song. I tuned in online to the services. They were very nice. I have no doubt that Mike impacted ALL people he met with same sincerity and honesty that came so naturally to him. I believe, if not for the pandemic, his service would have been over-flowing with friends, as he had MANY because Mike was not only liked but Loved. Mike left a beautiful, honest, and lasting legacy few can claim, and he (and you, his family) will remain in my thoughts and prayers. I hope we meet again. – Rene F. Gonzalez

To My dearest friend, Eddie. I have no words for this. Mike was a joy to be around and he made the moments we all shared so much more memorable and fun. I won't forget the way he loved to get to shows early to possibly meet bands and get merchandise autographed, the way he took such great pictures when he could, the way we all joked about his vast knowledge of the rock stars dental history, the way he always loved to go to Schlotzsky's when we would meet up in Austin for shows and record conventions. I also remember what a caring soul Mike was, a great family man, not far from Diana and Mikey and always ensuring they came first. I remember how he quickly responded to my need for some advice on air conditioning, and just embracing me as a friend without even knowing me that well. I am so sorry. May he RIP (Rock in Paradise)

To: Diana, Miguel Angel II and Eddie It is with an extremely heavy heart that I send my condolences for the loss of your husband, father, brother and my friend. As for all of us; time passes too quickly as we get older, but I never thought I would lose such a good friend in this phase of our life journey. Loss exacerbates the feeling of regret and time lost. I regret the time we lost contact and wasn’t there to comfort him from the loss of his loving parents. I regret that I wasn’t there to celebrate the birth of his son. I regret that we will never be able to enjoy metal music and engage in some our infamous golf matches. My heart will be a little less full with his passing; I will always be thankful for having his friendship in my life. Mike and I became friends at Nixon High School. Our instant bond was our interest in golf and music. He was more accomplished in both; learning and playing golf with his father, the first “Pin-High Perez” and music through his brother Eddie. In golf, we loved to mimic and talk about the great Texan golfer Ben Hogan and the great Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros. I was envious of Mike’s ability around the green and his golf swing. We had some epic battles at Casa Blanca GC or as Mike called it, “TPC at La Rock”. Casa Blanca is where we nurtured our friendship that would become a lifelong bond. During our golf matches; he discovered that I was eager to learn more about music and he was so open to sharing. There is so much music he introduced to me that is still in my collection today. As we grew older, our contact was limited as I moved to pursue my professional career. We always hope our friends find love and are always concerned with that journey. When love blossomed with Diana and Mike, I knew he had found an amazing partner in life and love. Mike was a kind, gentle person who loved to laugh and loved his family and friends unconditionally. His ability for unconditional love is what made Mike so special. Mike, I can’t say goodbye; I’d rather say, until the next time because I knew we will see each other again. Until then, keep a place for me in that standing golf tee time with your father, Ben and Seve. - Mike Hein
