Martha Sylvia Laurel, 77, entered into eternal rest on, Sunday, February 27, 2022. She was born August 19, 1944 in Alice, Texas to Jose and Olivia Vela.
She was a graduate of Alice High School in 1962. She received her B.A. degree in education from Texas A & I University in Laredo in 1976 and in 1985 received her M.A. degree. She began her teaching career for United I.S.D in 1976. She taught for 35 years and retired in 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her spouses, Carlos Perez; Javier Laurel; and a sister, Cynthia Garcia.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Carlos David (Tiffany) Perez, Lydia (Polo) Chaires; siblings, Joseph Sidney (Lilia) Vela, Sandra Vela (Stan) Grimes; grandchildren, Chelsea (Gilbert) Guzman, Whitney Perez, Lauren (Stefan Rincon) Palacios, Marco Chaires, Anissa Chaires; great-grandson, Cameron Guzman; as well as numerous other family and friends.
The family will be receiving guests on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Holy Rosary will be officiated at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Sylvia was a friend, colleague & my Reading Recovery/Descubriendo la Lectura trainer. UISD teachers were fortunate to be trained by Sylvia. She was strict because she was passionate, dedicated to preparing us to help students struggling to read. We attended several Reading conferences where we became colleagues & friends. I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing. She will be missed.
