Our beloved father Luis Vela, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 13, 2024 at the age of 84. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend who served his country with honor in the military and continued his commitment to service through a distinguished career in the postal service (post master). He leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, integrity, dedication and love. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.
He was born in Laredo, Tx on December 18, 1939. His childhood instilled in him patriotism, a lifelong passion for music, fine arts, and cooking which he loved to speak about with anyone who would listen. He graduated from Saint Joseph Academy and attended the University of Texas at Austin. Luis and Sylvia first met and bonded over their mutual appreciation for food, traveling, music, religion and family which they continued to share throughout their long and happy marriage. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to various countries and within the U.S. Also, he has served on the board of Casa de Misericordia serving our community with countless rewards. Luis and his wife are parishioners of St Patrick’s church where he was a member of the men’s club. He was a former Boy Scout master and member of Lulac. In addition, he and his wife were proud members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Luis and Maria Antonietta Vela.
He is survived by wife, Sylvia L. Vela, children, Luis A. Vela (Dawn) of San Antonio, Tx and Sylvia Y. Vela and grandchildren, London Vela and Eric Caudle and his beloved Jack Russel Terrier, Rosco, and endless family and friends.
A heartfelt thank you to his medical professionals for their care and support.
The family will be receiving condolences on Thursday evening, June 20, 2024 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services, 1320 Trey Dr.; where a Vigil and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, June 21, 2024 departing at 10:40 a.m. from Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services to St. Patrick’s Church for mass at 11 a.m.
Rite of committal and Interment will follow at a later date.
Pallbearers will be son: Luis A. Vela, grandson: Eric Caudle Jr., nephews: Eduardo Vela, David Vela, Roberto Vela and Carlos Ramirez
