On May 28, 2022 Lucia Hynes Ornelas passed away peacefully in her home in Laredo, Texas.
She was born in Laredo on April 30, 1931. She was raised in Laredo, went to St. Peter’s Parochial School and graduated from Martin High School where she was a cheerleader. She was also voted most popular at Martin High School in 1949. She was an avid dancer and studied under Maria Luisa Marulanda Ballas.
As a child, Lucia helped at the family bakery, La Bola. After graduation, she worked for Sames Motor Company, Southwestern Bell, and later for Vumore Company. She stayed with the company as it went through various changes until her retirement.
Lucia was a long time member of San Agustin Church before the building of the Lincoln-Juarez International Bridge forced the family to move from their home on 502 Grant. She then became one of the original parishioners of San Martin de Porres Church. Lucia loved company and always welcomed family and friends to her home with coffee, food, and good conversation. She was affectionately known to her contemporaries as Lulubelle and to everyone else as Tia Lucy.
She adored her only daughter, Patricia Wade, and was a caring and supportive aunt to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Margarita Hynes Ornelas and Marin Ornelas.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers and their spouses, Fernando Hynes Ornelas (May D. Ornelas) and Alfonso Hynes Ornelas (Sylvia V. Ornelas; her sisters, Alicia, Maria Luisa, and Elena Hynes Ornelas; and her nephew, Fernando Hynes Ornelas, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Wade and her nieces and nephews: Linda Gangi (Joseph Gangi), Maria Teresa Ornelas, Arturo Dominguez (Cordelia Zepeda), Maria-Luisa “Mary Lou” Ornelas-June (Raymond “Larry” June), Alfonso “Boyer” Ornelas (Adriana “Nani” Garcia) and Sylvia Ornelas Molina (Francisco “Kiko” Molina); as well as her grand nieces and nephews, Joseph Gangi, Jr. (Melissa Analy Vela), Aaron Gangi, Viviana June (Thomas Oldfield), Connor June, Alejandra Ornelas, Paloma June, Alfonso H.ynes Ornelas III, Ava Ornelas, Tatiana Molina and Natali Molina and her great grand nieces, McKenzye and Ryann Gangi and Marisol Oldfield.
A special thanks to her physician, Dr. Armando Garza, IV, and his staff as well as the care from the healthcare professionals at Altus Hospice Care.
A special thanks to her caregivers, Marta and Armando Lemus and Dora Mercado Lujan for their care and invaluable support to the family.
Visitation will be at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services, 1320 Trey Drive, Laredo, TX 78041. A vigil will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 5-9 p.m. A rosary will be celebrated at 7 p.m.
Memorial Mass will be at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. The family respectfully requests all attending Mass to please meet at the church. Internment will then follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
