With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lilia Sánchez García, who peacefully departed this life at the age of 93 surrounded by loved ones. Lilia was born on December 26th, 1930 in Laredo, Texas to Nicolás Sánchez and Librada Treviño.
Lilia is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters and her husband, Tomás García, Sr., as well as her two loving daughters, María Luisa Luna and Graciela G. Alonzo.
She is survived by her children, Diana G. Alardin, Tomás García, Jr. (Marina), Blanca Macias (Raul), Felipe de Jesús García (Elsa), Anna Lilia García O’Donnell (Brian), Cordelia G. Molina, and Ramon G. García (Michelle), sons-in-law Julian Luna and Juan Alonzo, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lilia García was an incredibly hard worker, an avid reader and forensics tv fan who could also be very competitive when playing her favorite board games of Loteria and Chinese checkers. She often would play Chinese checkers with family and, when she did, she showed no mercy as was proven in her victory against her 5 yr old granddaughter. Lilia also had the reputation of being incredibly quick witted with a wonderful sense of humor. Even in her final weeks, she did not hesitate to put us in our place with her sharp tongue if she felt we were slow to respond or answer her requests. But, she did this with a smile on her face knowing it was all in good fun.
Lilia also loved to garden. She often found herself tending to the gardens of whatever homes she happened to be visiting. She wouldn’t be there long before she would walk outside and start evaluating the plants and trees in your yard. And, we all welcomed her help and advice because, well…she had a green thumb and we all knew it. So, we would just step back and watch her do her magic.
As a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, you could not ask for anyone more loving, affectionate and attentive. She made herself available for generations of her children whenever they needed her. As she always said, “I go where I’m needed most.” And, she did. She traveled throughout Texas and even North Carolina to help care for her young loved ones, always making herself available for anyone needing that expert mom on-the-go.
We will miss you deeply and we will never forget you.
Rest peacefully mom. Your job here on earth is done and you were amazing…as always……
