Obituary

Josefina Isabel Santacruz (née Valadez) entered into eternal rest on October 28, 2020 at the age of 83. She was born to Jose and Guadalupe Casas Valadez on May 22, 1937 in Laredo, Tx.

Josefina is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, José Ascensión Santacruz and their two children; José Tadeo (Raquel) Santacruz, Melissa (Luis) Hinojosa; grandchildren Carlos Jose, Antonio Cristobal, Carolina Isabel, Emma Yvette, Mireya Elena, Karisa Raquel, Sofia Isabella; her siblings, José (Olga) Valadez of San Antonio, Tx, Aurora V. (Thomas) Remy of McKinney, Tx., Catarina Santacruz; sister-in-law, Aurora Santacruz, and her nieces and nephews, who referred to her as Tia Josie or Tia Fina.

Josie is a graduate of Martin High School, Laredo Junior College, and Texas Woman’s University. She was an elementary teacher with the Laredo Independent School District for 35 years working at Farias Elementary and then Bruni Elementary.

The catholic faith was a cornerstone of Josie’s life as she served in the church choir at Holy Redeemer throughout her school years. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church. Josefina also had a great devotion to the rosary and St. Jude, dying on his feast day. Josie’s two children have followed their mother’s example of service through music as they both serve in the St. Patrick Catholic Church music ministry.

Josefina is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Gloria V. (Martimiano) Bazan.

During the 17 years I lived in Laredo, the Valadez family was a next door neighbor. Had it not been for Josie, my mother, ailing father and two siblings would have been unable to attend my wedding in Houston a few years later. Being the caring and giving person she was, she drove them in her “bandaged” Chevy. Josie will be dearly missed by all who knew her. We extend our prayers and deepest sympathy to all members of the immediate family.

Mrs. Santacruz, it was a blessing to know you. I know we didn’t know each other on a daily bases but just know that you and your husband raised great children. Your son became my primo by marriage. He is talented, smart, giving, humble, a loving husband and father. He continues to make my Prima and their children happy. Please continue to watch over them. May you Rest In Peace. May time heal their hearts.
