Obituary

Jose Ricardo Cantu 50, entered into eternal rest on July 23, 2022.

“Rick,” as he was known to friends and family, was born on March 15, 1972 in Laredo, Texas.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at San Martin De Porres Catholic Church at 9:30 am.  Inurnment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Everyone is encouraged to meet at church.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Rosario Cisneros and Rene Cantu.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Rebecca Marie (Caleb) Garcia and Jose Ricardo Cantu, Jr.; grandchildren, Caleb Isaiah Garcia and Leia Garcia; siblings, Carolina Cantu, Rene (Carmela) Cantu and Corina (Rourke) Melendez; nephews and nieces; Jonathan Melendez, Christopher Melendez, Alejandro Sanchez, Andres Sanchez, Adriana Ariel Sanchez, Tristan Rourke Melendez, Lauren Amanda Melendez, Luca Rene Cantu and Jet Lorenzo Cantu.

Although Rick left this world much too soon, those whose lives he touched were greatly impacted. His love of family, especially his children and grandchildren, was infinite. Rick was happiest when he was around family, doting on his grandchildren, spoiling his dog Buddy, cooking for everyone, and watching a basketball game.

He was an extremely hard-working business owner, who took pride in his work and passed along his work ethic to his children.

Rick was a kind and gentle soul who loved deeply. He was loved by many and will forever be missed.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to all family and friends. Jose Ricardo Cantu (a.k.a. Poppa Rick) always carried a smile on his face no matter the trials he went through. Poppa Rick was the life of any party, he always made everyone laugh with his comments on how the Cowboys were going to win the superbowl every year before the season began or how Tony Romo was the greatest QB of all time. His love for Metal opened up my eyes to the beauty of the music genre. But of all these things nothing was more beautiful than the love Poppa Rick had for his son Lil Rick. Everytime they spoke to each other, one could always see and hear the respect and love they had for one another. And there was never a day I was over to their house that I wouldn't hear Poppa Rick look at Lil Rick and say "I love you, son," and lil Rick, without hesitation, would look back and say "I love you too, dad"

I met Ricky back in 1995-96 when I worked at CCMS at the old airport building in Laredo. I hired Ricky to clean our offices, and would see him in the evenings whenever I’d work a bit late. He was very down to earth, and such a good conversationalist. We’d chat while he worked. He was always smiling, always in a good mood, and everyone in the office liked him. Ricky was the type of person you don’t forget. I am glad God put him in my path.
