Legendary Icon Chef Jose A. “Pely” Mendez died peacefully at Laredo Medical Center on January 12, 2020, in Laredo, TX at the age of 73. He was born on March 18, 1946 in Merida,Yucatan to Arturo & Mercedes Mendez.
Mr. Mendez is preceded in death by his parents, Arturo & Mercedes Mendez; siblings, Arturo Mendez and Rosa Maria Del Valle.
Jose A. Mendez is survived by his extraordinary wife of 47 years Ana Maria Mendez; children, Ana (John†) Mendez Espinoza, Joe (Griselda) Mendez, Cindy (Felipe) Mendez Flores, Sergio Mendez, Rene Mendez, Melissa (Randy) Mendez Quintana, and Nancy Mondragon; grandchildren, Johanna (Sean) Evans, Janice (Pablo) Castillo, Johnathan Espinoza, Felipe Flores III, Juliza Espinoza, Jason Gonzalez, Randy Quintana Jr., Diego Flores, Joe Michael Gonzalez, Mason Gonzalez, and Luis Mondragon; great-grandchildren, Madison Evans, Xavier Castillo, and Ezekiel Castillo; siblings, Angelina Escobedo, Jorge (Ana Maria) Mendez, Noemi Rodriguez, Pilar (Juan Jose) Rojas, Teresa (Primitivo) Garza, Janette Duenas, and Natalia (Miguel) Fernandez.
Chef “Pely” Jose A. Mendez was a giving soul, a culinary trailblazer that served the likes of countless guests at La Posada Hotel for 51 years. He was a dedicated husband, a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His love for life touched everyone he knew.
The family will be receiving guests Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Prayer Service will start at 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The funeral mass will start at 10:00 am. Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Mendez, Sergio Mendez, Rene Mendez, Felipe Flores, Randy Quintana, Juliza Espinoza, Felipe Flores III, Jason Gonzalez.
