Hector Luis Herrera, 70, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021, peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side.
Born on May 16, 1951, to Margarito and Aida Herrera, Hector was the youngest of three siblings. He attended Martin High School and graduated in 1969, having played for the Tigers on the football and baseball teams. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He married Sylvia Rodriguez on October 10, 1975, and were married for 45 wonderful years. Together they raised four beautiful children, Bianca, Hecky, Willie, and J.J.
Hector was a proud Texan and his career spanned over 30 years with the Texas Department of Public Safety. He began his career as a State Trooper in 1974 and retired in 2006 as a Sergeant Investigator in the Criminal Intelligence Special Crimes Unit.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 850 and served as Treasurer.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He maintained life long friendships that he and Sylvia treasured. His great personality and quick wit will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was a people person as well as a dog person, and he never met a dog he didn’t like. He leaves behind his faithful companions, Peewee, Gigi, Sunny, Honey Bear, Coco, and Tessa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Margarito & Aida Herrera; brother, Humberto Herrera; brother-in-law, Ervey Garcia.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Sylvia Evangelina Rodriguez Herrera; children, Bianca Roxana Herrera (Rafael A.) Martinez, Hector Luis Herrera, Jr., Guillermo Rene (Daniela) Herrera, and Joel J. (Stephanie) Herrera; 4 grandchildren, Rafael Antonio Martinez, Jr., Zelie Evangelina Martinez, Hector Luis Herrera, III, Ethan Tomas Herrera; sister, Norma Herrera Garcia; sister-in-law, Rosalinda G. Herrera; as well as numerous other family and friends who will greatly miss him.
The family would like extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Marissa R. Gonzalez, Dr. Reynaldo Godines, and the staff of Doctors Hospital, especially Dr. Howard A. Peth, for taking such wonderful and compassionate care of him in his final days.
The family will be receiving guests on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 am. Cremation will be held at a later date.
