A tribute to Coach Hector Chacon’s and his legacy Hector Chacon is synonymous with Martin High School basketball. He coached at his alma mater for decades starting in the 1970s, having an influence on many athletes, students and fellow educators-coaches. Chacon, who was the “sixth man” on the Tigers notable and Laredo historic 1956 UIL State Basketball Championship team, died last Monday afternoon in Laredo. As well as being an avid golfer, words of praise about his life started pouring in from colleagues and friends just hours after his death. His daughter, Elvira (Bibi), now also an educator, was a former star basketball player at Martin. Her sister, Cynthia Cardenas, posted comments about their father and thanked all who were extending condolences. Chacon much enjoyed getting others involved during home games he coached. He started a group of girls naming them, “The Tiger Dolls,” to stand behind the Tiger bench helping players during timeouts. Also, he named a person from the community to sit on the Tiger bench calling them an “honorary coach” for the game. He coined “mosquito defense” and “mighty midgets” as nicknames for his teams. Goyo Lopez Sr. was on the scorers’ table for years when Chacon coached. Lopez kept the game scorebook at the Coach Bill Batey Martin Gym, whose court is labeled Hector Chacon Court. Two current schoolboy head coaches – Luis Valdez at Alexander and Hector Noyola at Martin – are Chacon protégés. A new head basketball coach came into town and was looking for a place to live. This corner directed him to a south Laredo apartment complex. As the new coach went exploring, “I crossed Chacon Creek and I knew I had to look elsewhere.” Among the memories shared with this corner about the personable, easy-going, fun-loving Chacon include: “I first met coach Chacon when I was still in elementary school. I attended one of the clinics he would hold for the feeder schools. A few short years later, I was lucky enough to be in his basketball program at Martin High where he taught us the value of preparation and teamwork, instilled confidence, perseverance, competitiveness and how these were applicable not only to athletics but life as well. We will forever be grateful for his mentorship. Rest in Peace Coach, Valla Con Dios.” Alex Martinez, notable Mexican American Studies Scholar, now living in Dallas. “Rest In Peace, Hector, “We had lots of fun on the golf course,” Frank Carter, former coach-athletic director at United ISD. Then first year coach Joe Navarro recalls, “Before practice, Coach Chacon would teach me ball drills, importance of free throws, bounce passes, 2-3 zone and box out. Afterwards, he would tell me ‘vamos a La Reynera para un café y un bisket’. (Let’s go to La Reynera Bakery (across the street from the Martin campus) for coffee and a biscuit.)’’ “Great player, great coach, great person, RIP,” Bobby Santos, retired superintendent of UISD. Indeed. Rest in Peace, Coach Hector Chacon. Your personality and memories are not forgotten and your legacy lives on forever. Salo Otero Retired sports editor Laredo Morning Times (1967-2009)

Enrique Garcia left a message on August 1, 2024:
When I first entered Martin High, Hector Chacon was my coach. It was his first year at Martin (I'm thinking 1969). He was excellent and knew how to handle the kids and he showed basketbal genius immediately. He became my mentor and father figure. My most memorable moment was when he took me to the doctor after telling him how bad I was feeling. He tought me the thrill and excitement of winning, and showed me how compitition applies to all aspects of life. I learned teamwork is key to succes. I owe it to my coach to a large degree what I became and did with my life- all the successes both personal and professional. I led a great life, family and profession. Thank you, Coach.
