Obituary

Gabriel E. Martinez, LPD Sergeant, Retired, 78, was called by the Lord to his resting place in Heaven on Monday, December 24, 2018.

Our father faithfully served his country during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a Sgt in the U.S. Air Force after serving four years and nine months on February 27, 1968.   Sgt. Martinez was stationed in Vietnam and Thailand.  He earned the National Defense Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon and Vietnam Service Medal.  He joined the Laredo Police Department on July 1, 1968 at the time Billy Weeks was Chief and Tom Gallagher was Inspector.  Sgt. Martinez retired in 1997.  After retirement from LPD, he worked at Webb County as court security officer and later at the Webb County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office.

In October of 1964 he married the love of his life Beva Rivera in a blessed ceremony.  Through this union, they produced 5 children who they raised in a world of love.

Sgt. Martinez is preceded in death by his parents Gabriel (Cristina) Martinez; sister, Cristina and his brother Jesus Heberto.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beva Martinez; 3 sons, LPD Captain GE (Pat) Martinez,  Jr., LPD Captain Benito (Chely) Martinez and Sergio (Isabel) Martinez; 2 daughters, Sonia (LPD Lieutenant Rene) Alvarado and Sandra (Alberto) Duarte; grandchildren, Ashley, Krista and GE Martinez, III, Brianna and Matthew Martinez, Bianka and Cora Martinez, Sonia Reneé and RJ Alvarado, Sandra Alexis, Albert and Alex Duarte; great-granddaughter Zaphira Chanel Alvarado (The one that changed his grumpy look every time they met) brothers, JL (Lupita), Francisco Javier (Armandina) , several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services.  A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm by Deacon Ramiro Garza.  Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28, 2018, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.  A funeral mass will start at 10:00 am.  Father Anthony Mendoza will officiate.  Interment will follow to the City Cemetery, Veterans Section.  Palbearers will be Benito Martinez, Sergio Martinez, Gabriel E. Please accept my sincere condolences at the passing of Sgt. Martinez or 'G.E." as he was known to friends. he was one of my role models when I was trying to find myself in Laredo,TX His sparkly eyes and ready smile was what made him so approachable. He will be missed by all of his brothers and sisters in blue. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 You fought the good fight,You have finished the race, You kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to you on that day—and not only to you but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Take your place at the right hand of God my brother. Rest in Peace .
