In memory of Efrain Jesus "E.J." Laurel, Jesse M. Torrez lit a candle
Efrain Laurel, brother and sisters, My name is Jesse Torrez. I was a Customs Agent stationed in Eagle Pass, Texas when I met your father who was there to help during Operation Intercept in the late 1960s. I didn't get to know him well because he and I were working on different activities. I knew of him because he did undercover work the same as Willie Diaz and I. I would hear that your Dad did a good job. Over the years your Dad and I kept in touch over the phone but shortly after I retired, in 1981, we lost touch. Accept my condolences on your loss. I wish I'd been able to give you all my condolences in person but it was not possible for me to attend the services. My prayers are with you all and I will say a prayer for your Dad.
RIP my fellow colleague. The Lord is waiting for to take guard at the border. I too was US Customs and taken to DEA at the July 1st 1973. Now have been given the wings of a Guardian Angel. Paul Provencio (retired 1994)
I worked with EJ briefly in Chicago in 1984. He truly was a fine agent and someone I greatly admired for the time I knew him. In 1985, when one of our agents, Enrique Camarena was kidnapped in Mexico, I remember getting a call from EJ who was retired at the time. He offered whatever services he could provide DEA in finding Agent Camarena. Unfortunately, though, it was too late. EJ in my opinion was a true American hero is every sense of the word and I only regret I wasn't able to know him longer. May he rest in peace.
Rest In peace
