Edmundo A. Martinez Jr. (Mundo) joined our Lord in His heavenly kingdom at the age of 45 on Saturday, November 20, 2021. Mundo lost a brave and long, hard fought battle to several illnesses during the past year, but not without leaving his mark and legacy on this world.
He was a talented writer, musician, artist, counselor, and public servant who served with the United Independent School District, the Laredo Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Laredo Port of Entry, CBP USCIS and the U.S. Veterans Administration in San Antonio, TX.
Mundo, as he was known in Laredo, or Ed, as he was known in San Antonio, was known for his quick wit, deep, philosophical conversations, an enormous heart and listening ear, and was a true friend who counseled many people. He was an old, gentle soul who truly took life one day at a time.
Edmundo attended Laredo public schools and graduated from United High School in 1994. He continued his education at Laredo Community College, then transferred to TAMIU, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science in Art in 2010 and Masters Degree in English in 2014.
Edmundo was known by his family and friends as a passionate and talented musician, whose hobbies included playing drums with his hometown band Chivato for audiences in Laredo, San Antonio, and other cities throughout Texas.
When he wasn’t playing the drums, he was spinning vinyl as an underground DJ, known as DJ Street Samurai, at venues in Laredo, San Antonio, and other cities.
True to form as an animal lover, Mundo also deeply loved and cherished his dogs Odie, Oso, and DiNiro.
Left to cherish his memory and legacy are his parents, Edmundo and Lucinda, younger sister Marcella “Marcy” A. Martinez, half brother Oscar L. Martinez, and Stepmother Sanjuana “Janey” Martinez, all of whom love him more than any words can express.
He also leaves behind paternal uncle José Luis (Patricia) Martínez; maternal uncles José Ángel, Armando (Verónica), Oscar (Linda) Hernández; and maternal aunts Imelda Hernández and Rebecca (Jamal) Rafati, as well as numerous cousins.
Also left to remember him are his many colleagues in the US government in Laredo, San Antonio, and throughout his home state of Texas, and much too many friends to mention from all walks of life.
Edmundo was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Licurgo and Jovita Martinez; paternal aunt, Marcella A. Martínez; maternal grandparents, Juan and Maria G. Hernandez; maternal aunt Yolanda Flores; maternal uncles Alfredo, Juan, and Mario Hernandez; and his younger sister, Cynthia D. Martinez.
To a life well lived.
