Obituary

“If you’re going to live, leave a legacy.  Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.” – Maya Angelou

Diana “Deanna” Galván, who peacefully and surrounded by her loving family entered the regions of immortal felicity on August 8, 2022 in Laredo, TX, has certainly left her mark not only on those closest to her but on the myriad of alumna who entered her classroom doors at Martin High School.

To call Miss Galván a teacher would hardly serve her justice; for she was like a candle, consuming itself to light the way for others, a visionary and pioneer who took cheerleading and dance in Laredo to the next level, and a mentor who selflessly took many under her wing and molded them into the best version of themselves.

Throughout her life, she modeled principals of integrity, hard-work, and dedication for her nieces and nephews who lovingly considered her their 2nd mom.  Her incessant encouragement fueled many of her loved ones’ personal achievements.  Being the gifted writer of the family, each member could always count on a poetic birthday message, for her thoughtful nature ensured we’d each feel loved on our special day.  She will always be affectionately remembered as “The Diva” of the family for her spirited personality, gypsy heart, sharp-witted sense of humor, and her fashion-forward sense of style which often saved many of us from fashion faux pas.

Though her passing leaves an immense void in our hearts and lives, her good example, the fruits of her labor, and her “mark” will endure.

She is preceded in death by grandparents, Inés and Antonia Galván and Juan and María de Jesús López, father, Marcelo Galván, Sr., and niece, Dyla Licon Ventura.

She is survived by her mother, Evangelina López Galván; siblings: Consuelo “Connie” (Raul) Ventura, Estela (Alfonso P., Jr.) Miranda, Juan Gerardo (Dora Elia) Galván, and Marcelo (Analicia) Galván, Jr.; nephews and nieces:  Raul (Lizette) Ventura, Jr., Estela Marisol (José) Lozano, Mónica Elizabeth Ventura, Veronica (José Javier) Villanueva, Juan Gerardo Galván, Jr., Marcelo (Jessenia) Galván III, and Issa Galván (Salvador Gutiérrez III) ; 8 great-nieces & great-nephews, and numerous other relatives.

A private rosary was held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services.  The funeral mass was held on Friday, August 12, 2022 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Fr. Jose G. Cadena as the celebrant followed by Interment at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Alfonso P. Miranda, Jr., Raúl Ventura, Sr., Raúl Ventura, Jr., Juan Gerardo Galván, Jr., Marcelo Galván, Jr., Marcelo Galván III, José Javier Villanueva, Jr., and alternate pallbearer, Vicki Jalomo.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the MD Anderson Medical staff including John V. Heymach, M.D. (Oncologist) and staff, in particular Melody, Laredo Hematology & Oncology Associates including Mohsen Ghadimi-Mahani, M.D. (Oncologist) and staff, Benson Y. Huang, M.D. (Pulmonologist) and staff, Adonis Zuñiga-Goldwater, M.D. (Internal Medicine) and staff, Amistad Home Health and staff, in particular Consuelo “Connie” Martinez, and Nurses on Wheels Hospice and staff  in particular Sylvia Flores.

I just found out of my mentor Ms. Galvan and I wanted to celebrate her life. She was a beacon who brought out the very best in her students, especially me. I learned how to become the woman I am today. Ms. Galvan was amazing in dance and how those she coached, learned to troubleshoot and know what it meant to be a team. Ms. Galvan took the time to show me how to keep evolving and how to better serve community. I have been trying to reconnect with her for the last 10yrs yet, little did I know… May God bless you all and I know she’s in our heavenly fathers embrace. Cheers to our beloved.

Dear Estela, Poncho and family, I was deeply saddened at the news of Deanna's passing. My brother Walter "Gogi" said," She was one of my class." She was a shining star that is now beaming down on us. Sincerely, Betty Kramer
