Obituary

As a child in Belfast, Anthony survived the Luftwaffe blitz to move to South Texas, following in the geographical footsteps of his legendary elder brother, the late Monsignor Thomas P. “Father Tom” McGettrick in 1966. He later graduated from the University of Texas School of Law, marrying a fellow Longhorn, with whom he then raised 3 kids in Laredo, where he served as erstwhile City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney, and in private practice – becoming, in the process, one of the most unique Laredoans of all time.

He retired from the City Attorney’s office in 2009, and thereafter enjoyed a retirement spent in his favorite activities; most notably, the voracious consumption of books, magazines, and newspapers, and this often accompanied by a steak, or by the best Mexican cuisine (for which Laredo is most famous) and a cigar or two. All of this, of course, when not hanging out with his 7 grandkids.

Anthony was preceded into the hereafter by his son, Michael Broderick McGettrick, and by 5 of his fifteen siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth McGettrick (nee DeLeon), daughter Monica Walters and son-in-law Jacob Walters of Laredo, son Daniel McGettrick and daughter-in-law Denise McGettrick of Houston; as well as by grandchildren Emily McGettrick and Carmen McGettrick of Corpus Christi, Maeve and Olivia Walters of Laredo, and Patrick, Beatrice and Dominic McGettrick of Houston. Furthermore, Anthony is survived by his little brother Malachy McGettrick and his wife Margaret, of Buda, and their family, as well as his ever-supportive sister-in-law, Rachel Blasczynski of Corpus Christi.

Funeral services will be held privately; but condolences would be gladly received at the following e-mail address: monmcwalters@gmail.com.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Anthony’s name to the ACLU at aclu.org.

Funeral arrangements are by Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services, 1320 Trey Dr., Laredo, Texas 78041 (956) 723-3611. For your convenience, you may leave your condolences to the family online at www.freddickey.com
