Obituary

Alonzo Lauro Ramirez Sr. passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022 at the age of 88.

He was born in Laredo, TX on January 10, 1934 to Manuel and Juanita G. Ramirez. He was raised in Ramireño, TX until the age of 11 when he came to Laredo with his beloved aunt, Antonia Ramirez to attend Saint Joseph Academy where he graduated in 1952. He attended Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M Kingsville) from 1952-1954. From 1954-1956 he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Texas A&I University to continue his education and receive his Bachelor’s degree. He went on to receive his Master’s Degree from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce).

He began working in 1957 for the Laredo Independent School District. He served in various capacities with LISD. He started as an elementary school teacher at MacDonnell Elementary, Sanchez-Ochoa Elementary School, and Milton Elementary School where he later served as assistant principal and principal. He went on to serve as Principal at Lamar Middle School and Memorial Middle School. His last position with LISD was as Director of Personnel. Alonzo was also a member of various educational and civic organizations.

After his retirement, Alonzo and his wife moved to his beloved Ramireño where they enjoyed a beautiful and peaceful life. After 4 years at the ranch, they moved back to Laredo because they were now traveling daily to Laredo to attend their grandchildren’s activities. After that, the entire family would enjoy weekends and holidays at the ranch.

Mr. Ramirez was a quiet and simple man, a true gentleman, always impeccably dressed, respectful to all, and a good catholic who had great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He prayed his two rosaries daily and heard mass daily from the Eternal Word Network. He was liked and respected by all who met him.

Mr. Ramirez adored his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He spoke to them always with a soft, loving voice. They all adored him. Their “Wito” was the best.

Alonzo loved his wife Amelda of 64 wonderful years, even though he always said they were 70 years; 64 years of marriage plus the 6 years that they were “sweethearts” from high school through college.

Mr. Ramirez was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Juanita G Ramirez, his beloved sons, Alonzo Jr. (08/13/20) and David Martin (08/05/22), his aunt who raised him, Antonia Ramirez, sister Gloria Villarreal (Roel+) of Zapata, TX, and his in-laws Guadalupe and Gertrudis Saenz. Brother-in-law Guadalupe Saenz Jr (Tere).

Alonzo is survived by his wife Amelda Saenz Ramirez, his beloved daughter Lourdes Gilpin (Judd), who stayed with him 24 hours a day while at the hospital, his sister Rosa Elia Cuellar (Angel+), his grandchildren Alonzo Lauro III (Alexandra), Alejandro Luis, Gabriela, David Jr. (Claudia), Carlos, Amanda, Morgan Gilpin, and Brit Gilpin. Also, his great-grandchildren Kaleb, Aaron, and Anthony Ramirez, His daughters-in-law Martha (Alonzo+), and Lamar (David+). Survived by nephews Roel Villarreal, Jerry Villarreal, and Angel Cuellar and niece Roxane (Bryan) Allsup.

Guests are encouraged to attend the funeral mass which will be celebrated on Monday, November 14, 2022 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1718 San Jorge Ave. Interment will follow at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
