Abel Peña known as “Peñon” to his fellow police officers gained his angels wings on Monday, October 17,2022, at the age of 66 surrounded by his loving family by his side at Laredo Medical Center. Born in January 12,1956, he was one of six siblings. Abel spent his life in Laredo and was a graduate of Nixon High School.
Abel dedicated his life serving the community as a Laredo Police Officer and he was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys football team.
In 1981, he started working for the Laredo Police Department as an officer. During his 31 years of service he was assigned to the DEA Task Force, ID section and also served as a Vice President for his Union. Throughout his career he developed friendships with many co-workers that lasted to this day.
Abel met the love of his life, Oralia. They were married in 1975 and had 5 children. Their oldest daughter Isabel gained her angel wings in 1983. Family was the most important thing to him. What he loved more than anything was spending time with his loving family. He also loved going to dances with his wife and enjoyed watching the Dallas Football games with his sons.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Isabel Peña, grandson Abel Peña III; Parents Alfredo and Josefina Peña; Parents in law, Candelario and Cruz Olivia Lopez.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 47 years Oralia, his children Abel(Darlene) Peña, Isabel (Rene+)Cuevas Peña, Adrian Peña, and Abelardo Peña. Grandchildren Natalie Peña, Abel F. Peña, Jeronimo Velasquez, Mya Peña, Avel C. Peña, Anabell Velasquez and Abelardo Peña Jr. ; Siblings, Nancy(Gene) Granado, Alfredo(Elisa) Peña, Alberto( Esmeralda) Peña, Antonio(Rachel) Peña, Alfonso(Mary) Peña, and Norma( Victor) Vasquez; In-law family Candelario Jr. (Mary) López,Gloria(Martín) García, Rene López+ Martín López+ Ricardo+(Esther)López, Norma(Antonio) Teneyuque Diana (Tomas) Barrera, Gilberto López, Javier (Mary) López, Sandra (Oswaldo)Flores, Gerardo López+ Carlos López+ Érica (Beto) Chaires along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many close friends who were like family to him. Abel will be remembered always for being a true fan of the Dallas Cowboys team and for all the love he had for his family.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff of LMC 2c, Icu step down unit, AmeriCare home health, Victorious Care Ambulance, Hope Kidney Care Clinic, Dr. Varela and Staff Laredo Police Dept.
The family will be receiving guests on Friday, October 21, 2022, in the Angelus chapel at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at San Vicente de Paul Catholic Church located at 2710 Boulanger St, Laredo, TX 78043. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
