Obituary

Tirza Magdalena Martin Cox

December 6, 1938 – October 25, 2016

Tirza Magdalena Martin Cox, loving wife, mother and loyal friend passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.  She was born in Laredo to parents, Victor Dan and Maria Luisa Martin.

Tirza graduated from Ursaline Academy, class of 56, and Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, TX.  She taught in San Antonio, TX, but dedicated most of her thirty-eight year career to the students of Laredo Independent School District.  She was especially proud that she taught the last four years before retirement at Raymond and Tirza Martin High School, a school named for her great grandparents.

A devout Catholic, Tirza was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church since its inception and a long-time supporter of San Francisco Javier Church and the Cursillo de Cristiandad de Laredo.  Tirza truly enjoyed playing cards and traveling.  She and her card “buddies” spent every Tuesday afternoon and many Thursday afternoons visiting and laughing through a lively game of “pata” or continental.  She and John traveled often; she was particularly fond of cruises and casino trips.

Tirza is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Dan Martin; brother, Victor Dan Martin, Jr.; daughter, Lisa Christine Rives.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 34 years, John T. Cox; son, Richard C. Rives, Jr., daughter-in-law, Patricia Diaz Rives; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Daniel and Mr. and Mrs. James Vann; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Also left to cherish her memory are her care-givers Socorro Sanchez, Lorena Medina and Citlali Garza.  Their love and care for her will always be remembered by her family.

The family will receive guests Friday, October 28, 2016, starting at 8:00 am to 9:30 am at Fred Dickey Funeral & Cremation Services.  Funeral procession will depart the funeral home at 9:30 am to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am.  Pallbearers will be: Raymond Botello Jr., Ruben Botello, Michael Daniel, Tyler Gutierrez, Beto Lopez, Robert Martinez, Adam Rivet and J.T. Trevino.

I didn't know Tirza, although I was a classmate of her late brother Victor. I sent the obituary to Tirza's 2nd cousin, Maud Martin, in Orleans, France. Maud offered prayers for Tirza, and asked me to convey her condolences to the family. I offer my condolences, as well.

On behalf of myself personally and for the Laredo Animal Protective Society (LAPS), I wish to offer my condolences to John and to Tirza's family on her passing. Tirza and I go back to Girl Scout days and she and John have been loyal supporters of the animal shelter forever. The "get acquainted" play area was named for them. Sincerely, Jennie L. John and Family Members, We are very saddened by Tirza's sudden death. She was truly an example of a devoted Catholic lady who had great faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Tirza, Golden Girls members and I and of course her Mom attended several Ultreya masses and meetings for many years/ We will miss her. You will all be in our prayers and we are praying for God to grant her eternal rest.
